Crispy beef strips in a dark, glossy chilli and honey sauce with tenderstem broccoli and sliced spring onions on a glass platter

Crispy strips of beef coated in a sticky, glossy chilli and honey sauce, this Chilli & Honey Crispy Beef is a takeaway-style favourite you can easily make at home. The beef is marinated in soy sauce, ginger and garlic, coated in cornflour and fried until crisp, then tossed in a sweet, tangy sauce with a gentle kick of chilli.

Serve it with tenderstem broccoli, as I have here, or make it a full meal with egg fried rice or noodles.

For the Beef

  • 500 g beef, cut into thin strips
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ginger garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper powder
  • 60 g cornflour
  • Oil, for frying

For the Chilli and Honey Sauce

  • 4 tablespoons dark soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon chilli flakes
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar

To Finish

  • Spring onions, sliced

Method

  1. Marinate the Beef: Place the beef strips in a bowl with the soy sauce, ginger garlic paste and black pepper powder. Mix well and leave to marinate for 15 minutes.
  2. Coat in Cornflour: Add the cornflour to the marinated beef and toss until every strip is evenly coated.
  3. Fry the Beef: Heat the oil in a wok or deep frying pan. Fry the beef strips in batches until dark golden and crisp, then remove and set aside.
  4. Make the Sauce: Add the dark soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, chilli flakes, rice vinegar and vinegar to a pan. Stir together and bring to the boil.
  5. Combine: Add the fried beef strips to the pan and toss until they are evenly coated in the sauce.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Finish with sliced spring onions and serve hot.

Tips and Variations

  • Slice the beef thinly and against the grain so it stays tender.
  • Shake off any excess cornflour before frying, and fry in batches so the pan is not overcrowded and the strips stay crisp.
  • Adjust the chilli flakes to taste for a milder or spicier version.
  • Check that your soy and hoisin sauces are halal-suitable, as some brands contain alcohol.
  • Serve immediately, as the beef softens the longer it sits in the sauce.

Storage

Keep leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat thoroughly before serving.

Allergy information: Contains soya, wheat and gluten. Hoisin sauce may also contain sesame, so check the label.
